Louis Bayle

Louis Bayle (born September 11, 1907 in Bazas , † March 23, 1989 in Toulon ) was a French author, Romanist , linguist and Provençalist .

life and work

Bayle studied Lettres classiques in Aix-en-Provence , as well as Provencal language and literature with Emile Ripert . He graduated with a license, did military service in Madagascar and became a high school teacher for French in Morocco, then for French and Provençal in Toulon . He was the editor of La Targo magazine . Revue bilingue de la Provence (1962 ff) and founded the association 'L'Astrado prouvençalo' in Toulon in 1965 to support the Provencal language with a publishing house and distance learning courses for learning the language (today in Berre-l'Étang ). Bayle emphasized the independence of Provençal from the other Occitan languages . He wrote poetry and prose in the Provencal language and wrote a number of linguistic works.
