geography

River course

The river rises on the northern slopes of Pyramid Mountain in the center of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park and initially flows in a semicircle around the neighboring mountain The Amphitheater from an initially easterly direction over north to west. Below Mount Nereus it turns its course to the northwest and from the confluence of the Bluff River to the southwest. Shortly thereafter, he enters Lake Murchison , which directs him again in a northwesterly direction. At the western edge of the national park it emerges below the Murchison Dam and after a few kilometers flows into Lake Rosebery near the small town of Tullah , where it forms the Pieman River together with the Mackintosh River .

dam

The Murchison River was dammed southeast of the small town of Tullah to Lake Murchison. The narrow, long lake extends into the western part of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park. Water from this reservoir is fed into Lake Mackintosh via the Sophia Tunnel to generate electricity .
