Iva Procházková (born June 13, 1953 in Olomouc ) is a Czech - German writer . For her books, she has received major national and international prizes in the field of children's and youth literature , including the German Youth Literature Prize (1989), the IBBY Certificate of Honor for Writing (2000) and the Lynx of the Year (2012). Her best-known books include Die Nackten (2008) and Orange Days (2012).

life and work

Procházková spent the first three years of her life with her grandmother and great-grandmother in Olomouc. When she was three she moved to Prague and lived with her parents there. Her father Jan Procházka was a writer and died in 1971.

In 1972 Procházková graduated from high school in Prague. Since her father was infected with a political book and was one of the intellectual leaders of the Prague Spring , she was not allowed to study and worked as a cleaning lady. In 1975 her first play was staged in the Nejedly Theater in Prague and banned by the then mayor for political reasons. From 1976 to 1983 Procházková wrote other plays, which could only be performed outside of Prague.

In 1983 she emigrated with her family and settled first in Austria and later in Germany. There she began to publish. Since 1984 her books have been published by various German children's and youth book publishers. Also in 1984 her play The Poet's Widow was performed in Alpbach. From 1986 to 1988 she lived in Konstanz and worked at the youth theater Schlauer Kater . In 1988 she moved to Bremen and worked there, among other things, with the Theater für Kinder Im Packhaus .

After the political upheavals of 1989, her works also appeared (again) in her old homeland, where she returned in 1995. Since 1990 she has been working for the Czech public television broadcaster CT, where she was editor-in-chief for children, youth and family programming from 1998 to 2001 and also worked as a producer. In 2012 she was a member of the jury for the award The Extraordinary Book of the children and youth program of the Berlin International Literature Festival . Since 2001 she has been working as a freelance writer and screenwriter in Prague, where she also lives in the old town. Procházková's books have been translated into more than ten languages.

Press review

General importance as a writer

“For almost three decades Iva Procházková has been one of the best-known, most popular and successful authors of children's and young people's books in the Czech Republic, Germany and German-speaking Switzerland. [...] Basically, it makes little sense to want to go into all the prizes and nominations for the likeable Czech woman; Her last youth book Nazi ( The Naked ) can be considered exemplary: it was nominated in Germany by the youth and specialist jury for the German Youth Literature Prize (Procházková won it in 1989 with Die Zeit der Secret Desires ) and received the highest literary prize in the Czech Republic, the state magnesia Litera Prize. The quality of Procházková's books is undisputed; And it looks similar with her readings: Procházková has her readers under control not only in the Czech Republic, but also in Germany; probably less because of her very good knowledge of German, but in particular because of her empathy towards the young readers, who she lures with questions from the reserve she likes to take, or because of exciting additional information about her books and her own biography. "

- Katja Wiebe : Overview study on current children's and youth literature in Poland, Russia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, p. 69

"The 60-year-old is the most important author of contemporary Czech literature for children and young people."

- Birgit Dankert : The homecoming in Die Zeit from November 15, 2012, p. 46

"Iva Procházková is the leading contemporary author in the context of Czech and German literature for children. [...] In stories with a fairy-tale touch and socially-conscious prose, she wrestles with profound issues such as the problems surrounding authoritarian upbringing, the simple yearning of a child for its grandparents or a person that is close, growing up in today's world, relationships in broken families and perceptions of death and mortality. "

The Naked (2008)

“Iva Procházková has been a fixed star in youth literature for a number of years . Among other things, she received the German Youth Literature Prize and was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal . Her fine feeling for the contractions and sensitivities of adolescence, for the mental dance around her own self and her literary verve, she unites in portraits whose poetic power can also be found in miniatures. "

- FAZ of November 28, 2008, No. 279, p. L10

The Naked is an episodic, psychologically deep novel. Iva Procházková captures the experience and thinking so typical of puberty authentically and, through the nature of the different characters, touches the central questions of young people without finally answering them. The novel by the Czech author, who writes in German, has rough edges and challenges the reader. But that is exactly why he will encourage young readers to grow with the characters in the novel. "

"Procházková uses an effective variation of stylistic devices in combination with the symbolic unraveling of classic literary themes for adolescents."

Orange Days (2012)

"In none of the monthly LUCHSE 2012 will the reader find a thematically and linguistically so successful synopsis of the reality experienced and the overflowing emotional world of a young person."

- Jury of the lynx : press box

“It is a stroke of luck for all German readers that Iva Procházková brings her knowledge of emigration, return and change to books like Orange Days. With Darek and Hanka, 20 years after the turning point, which was an existential experience for the author and a power in the background for the reader, we experience the value of love and freedom. She misses stories that allow young readers a gradual introduction to world literature, which is as entertaining as it is high quality. With her realistic contemporary novels, in which politics is not in the foreground, but certainly reaches into the lives of her people, she succeeds in doing just that. "

- Birgit Dankert : The homecoming in Die Zeit from November 15, 2012, p. 47

“On the youth book market in the Czech Republic, fantasy, graphic novels and comics are currently playing a bigger role than realistic depictions of youthful life in post-socialist society. The author's books, television programs and films are impulses to revive an interrupted quality standard. The ČSSR was known and respected worldwide for its picture and children's books, for puppet shows and films. Iva Procházková has an important role to play between young, unencumbered up-and-coming talents, authors who used to be loyal to the line, cautious reformers and Czech artists who have not returned home. Through her personal fate and her literary work, she bears testimony to the will for freedom of a generation of authors who have paid a lot for this freedom and - as in the youth novel Orange Days - carries it on with passion and discipline as the center of youthful attitude to life. "

- Birgit Dankert : The time

“Iva Prochazkova is really good at combining reality, in this case life in the Czech provinces, with the feelings and perspectives of a teenager. She does it so convincingly, you believe her every word and you can really empathize with this boy, the main character Darek, who grows up in a village where there is no more work, where there is a lot of alcohol involved and where it is for children like hardly gives him any prospects for the future. And this boy falls in love for the first time, and those very tender moments in which he gets closer to his girlfriend Hanka - that is really great storytelling. "
