Birgit Dankert (née Nick , born January 30, 1944 in Mühltroff ) is a German library and information scientist .

Life

Dankert attended elementary school in Borghorst, Westphalia, and the Arnoldinum grammar school in Steinfurt , where she graduated from high school in 1964. She studied German literature , art history , philosophy and journalism in Münster and Tübingen (graduating Magister Artium 1969). She then completed a second degree in library science at what was then the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (graduation: diploma librarian 1971).

Her professional career began Dankert as an editor and project manager in the Biichereizentrale Flensburg , one of his time from the German border association , the authorities and the state of Schleswig-Holstein funded organization Office for public libraries, national circular cities in Schleswig-Holstein. From 1981 until her retirement in 2007, she taught as a professor in the library department of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (today: Hamburg University of Applied Sciences ); from 1992 to 1994 she was the spokesperson for the department.

In the meantime, she was appointed head of the Hamburg Public Library Foundation in 1996 . Due to the drastic savings demanded by the Hamburg Senate with the aim of closing numerous bookhouses in Hamburg's districts, there were technical differences of opinion. As a result, she resigned four months later.

In addition to her teaching activity, Dankert has held numerous library and cultural policy offices since 1973: This is what she was like

  • Chair of the Working Group for Youth Literature / IBBY Section Federal Republic of Germany (1978–1982)
  • Committee member of the world association IFLA (1977–1989)
  • Member and chairwoman of the "Libraries, Media Libraries" Advisory Board of the Goethe Institute (1983–2000)
  • Chairwoman of the Association of Librarians at Public Libraries (1986–1992)
  • Member of the federal-state working group on the integration of the German-German library system after reunification (1990–1992)
  • Secretary of the European Library Association EBLIDA (1992–1997)
  • Spokeswoman for the Federal Union of German Library Associations (1994–2000)
  • Chairwoman of the Society of Friends of the Hamburg State and University Library (2009–2015).

Since 1969, Dankert has published specialist articles on library science, cultural policy, children's and youth literature and its library communication, and since 1985 she has been writing reviews for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit .

Awards

Dankert received the Karl Preusker Medal in 2005 for her life's work in library.
