The lending and supplementary library (LEB) ( formerly : Landeszentralbibliothek (LZB)) in Flensburg- Sandberg. As a department of the Schleswig-Holstein library center , it is the central lending and information point for the Schleswig-Holstein library system and the German libraries in North Schleswig .

task

In the function of a central library, the LEB has the task of supplementing the supply of literature and information to the predominantly small and medium-sized public libraries and mobile libraries with its media inventory for high needs. In addition, with the authorization to participate in national and international loan transactions , it ensures that individuals are supplied with scientific literature in the area. Other services offered by the LEB are the processing of subject orders, source research, bibliographies and the provision of special loan collections for libraries, care and educational institutions. These services are available to everyone through the libraries affiliated with the Schleswig-Holstein library system. To fulfill these tasks, she is a member of the joint library network and cooperates with the Dansk Centralbibliotek for Sydslesvig and the city libraries in Flensburg, Kiel and Neumünster. For the care of the citizens of Flensburg, she only has the role assigned to her in the context of her lending and supplementary function. Because: "The task of supplying literature for basic and special needs lies exclusively with the Flensburg City Library ."

The LEB's inventory comprises around 136,000 media units from all disciplines, 15,000 journal volumes, over 5,000 reference works and several special databases. In addition to Schleswig-Holstein regional studies, the focus is on around 7,000 audio books and around 8,300 DVD and Blu-ray discs. In addition, the LEB looks after around 35,000 volumes and maps from the historical Flensburg holdings in the provost library, the Nikolaibibliothek and the library of the old grammar school. The old stocks are currently only recorded in slip or interim catalogs. Since 2015, these holdings have been recorded in the GBV's joint union catalog as part of the retro-cataloging. (Status: 2018)

history

The history of the development of the lending and supplementary library as a service library for libraries began almost at the same time as the development of organized libraries in the Schleswig region. In 1923, the Central Office for Nordmark Libraries laid the foundation stone for the LEB in its current form with the establishment of its manual library and the start of scientific lending. In order to be able to promote and further develop the German library system in the German-Danish border area, the head office began planning a library for special tasks just one year later.

1925–1959 Neustadt public library

On October 19, 1925, the Neustadt Public Library (later also the Neustadt Leading Library ) was opened as a training and testing library . It was located in the premises of a grammar school in the Neustadt 12 building. At the beginning, its loan inventory comprised 2,500 volumes of books, 42 newspapers and magazines and a reading room inventory with 350 volumes. After the referendum in Schleswig that had taken place a few years earlier, it was intended to create a counterpoint to the Danish cultural influences on the working population in this district. The library developed very well in the first few years and the number of visits and loans rose sharply every year. so that the further development of the library system in the city area and an adjustment of the framework conditions required. This quickly became problematic, because as early as 1929, there were 1,612 readers for the 5,523 loanable volumes with a total of 44,457 loans. This meant that each book had been borrowed eight times on average, which meant that more volumes were worn out than new acquisitions were possible. In terms of space and personnel, the library had already reached its limits after four years of operation. In addition, she had also taken over the interlibrary loan function for the libraries in the Schleswig region as early as 1928. In connection with a small increase in space, a children's reading room was set up in 1938. The further development of the library made slow progress in the following years, despite its success. It was possible to set up a children's reading room in 1938, combined with a small increase in space, but further improvements were not made. A little later, the outbreak of war prevented any further efforts. After the end of the war, the Central Office for Nordmark Libraries, like many public institutions, had to reorganize during this time before planning for the future of the Neustadt library was possible again. After that, it was still to take a few years before, after around a year of construction, at the end of 1959, the urgently needed new library building at Duburger Strasse 2-8 could finally be moved into.

1959–1972 Nordertor library

With the move to its own building, the library was named Bücherei Nordertor (ÖB Nordertor). It was named after the northern city gate of Flensburg's old town , which is within sight .

At the end of 1972 the library was closed to the public and the possibility of borrowing for readers on site (local loan) was discontinued. With this, the ÖB Nordertor lost its function as a district library for the city of Flensburg.

1973–2010 State Central Library

On January 2, 1973, the library resumed operations as the newly founded state central library (LZB) with a new orientation.
The tasks of the new library were:

  • Organization of regional lending
  • Handling of scientific lending
  • Provision of a supplementary inventory
  • Library information and inquiry service

It was based on the premises of the former ÖB Nordertor, as well as its staff and media for adult literature. The stocks of children's and youth literature had previously been given to the newly established mobile library of the City of Flensburg , as they were no longer needed. The elimination of the opening times for the citizens of Flensburg should be compensated by the use of the new mobile library. This specialization enabled the LZB to increase the number of loans in the lending business with the Schleswig-Holstein library by 60% in the first year. In the course of the year, it was able to process a total of 26,800 orders, around 6,400 of which were from scientific lending.

2010- Lending and supplementary library

In order to make its task for the Schleswig-Holstein libraries clear to the outside world, the state central library changed its name to the lending and supplementary library on July 1, 2010. In addition, the lack of a regional reference greatly reduced the risk of confusion with the Schleswig-Holstein State Library . In line with this change, the core task of the internal company was specified and the inventory structure was increasingly geared towards "more specialized" and higher-priced media as a supplement to the library holdings of small and medium-sized libraries. In addition, the concept of archiving the last copy would be abandoned and extensive inventory maintenance would be carried out.

In 2017 the LEB took on a pioneering role in Schleswig-Holstein with the introduction of the open source library software Koha . As a “pilot library”, it tested the software's suitability for use in the 13 mobile libraries of the Schleswig-Holstein library headquarters.
