The Schleswig-Holstein State Library , or SHLB for short , in Kiel is the central state library of the State of Schleswig-Holstein and a special library for Schleswig-Holstein history and regional studies, founded in 1895 .

Jens Ahlers was the director from 2005 to 2019 . From 1949 to 1970 this was Olaf Klose , followed by Klaus Friedland and from 1985 to 2005 Dieter Lohmeier . Martin Lätzel has been the new head of SHLB since May 2019 . The state library is to be expanded under his direction to include a center for digitization and culture and the digital house of state history .

In 1974 Wilhelm Maßmann bequeathed to the library a collection of chess literature comprising around one and a half thousand books , which thus contributed to the largest public collection of literature on chess composition in the German-speaking area and formed the foundation for a collaboration between the library and the Schwalbe problem chess association founded by Maßmann .
