The Flensburg City Library (also: Flensburg City Library ) is the city library of the City of Flensburg and a member of the German Library Association . It is located on the top floor of the Flensburg Gallery and is open on weekdays.

Furnishing

The total inventory amounts to approximately 120,000 media, most of which are books, but also numerous magazine titles and a number of audiovisual media. The focus of the holdings is on popular literature rather than scientific literature. In addition to a media collection for adults, it maintains a media collection for children (children's library), which is slightly separated. Most of it is available over the counter. Only a small part is in the on-site magazine . In addition to the book inventory, the user can use one of the ten or so internet sites. In addition, users of the Flensburg City Library can borrow e-books, e-audios, e-videos and e-papers from home throughout the week.

In addition, the city library maintains a mobile library (book bus) in which another part of the inventory is offered. Books that cannot be found in the inventory can be obtained from other libraries via interlibrary loan. The city library realizes interlibrary loan with the help of the interlibrary loan and supplementary library (LEB) (formerly the regional central library in Flensburg) at Waitzstraße 5.

history

The Flensburg City Library was founded in 1905.

Until 1962 the library was located in the library wing of the German House . In August 1962 it moved to a new building located at 40/42 Süderhofenden and thus became an independent institution. With the move, the library became an open access library . The Natural Science Museum Flensburg (local history museum) was also located in the new building . In 1972 a magazine for the mobile library was set up in the Heilandskapelle in Weiche .

In 1998 the library was rebuilt. The local history museum moved to the Museumsberg Flensburg and the library will be expanded by the vacated space. In the now renovated building, however, the library only remained until 2004, because the building had to give way to the construction of a shopping arcade. In the meantime, the library was therefore located on Angelburger Strasse for 2 years . At the beginning of 2007 she moved to the new rooms on the 2nd floor of the Flensburg Gallery . Since September 2, 2011, users can borrow e-books, e-audios, e-videos and e-papers.

Since 2005, the position of library manager had to be reassigned every two to three years. The Flensburger Tageblatt puzzled in 2018 on the reasons, spoke of an ejection seat and noted that this would be less expected content compared with other libraries.
