The Autobahn Directorate South Bavaria is a state authority subordinate to the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Building and Transport with its headquarters in Munich ( Altstadt-Lehel district ). Michael Kordon is the leader.

The "sister authority" is the Autobahn Directorate North Bavaria with headquarters in Nuremberg .

The Autobahn Directorate South Bavaria is an authority of the Free State of Bavaria that is responsible for the construction, operation and management of the freeways on behalf of the federal government. The costs for the construction are taken over by the federal government. The state bears the costs of planning and administration and receives a reimbursement for the construction, which was increased in 2018.

The area of ​​responsibility extends to the administrative districts of Upper Bavaria , Lower Bavaria and Swabia . In addition, there is the greater Regensburg area from the Upper Palatinate .

The route network is divided into operating routes, for each of which a motorway maintenance depot is responsible.

In 2013, around 940,000 vehicles traveled this route network every day.

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, projects of around 8 billion euros are classified as being of the highest urgency for the area of ​​the Southern Bavaria Motorway Directorate. In addition to the continuous completion of the A 94 to Pocking (A3), the focus is on the expansion of the Munich A 99 motorway ring and the expansion of the A 8 from the Munich-South motorway junction to Traunstein.

Reform of the federal motorway administration

On October 14, 2018, the Prime Ministers of the federal states, together with the responsible ministers of the federal government, decided on a fundamental reform of the motorway administration together with the reform of the state financial equalization system. The tasks previously performed by the federal states will be taken over by Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes on January 1, 2021 . The employees of the Autobahn Directorate South Bavaria, along with almost 15,000 employees from the other Autobahn administrations in the federal states, will be transferred to the GmbH founded in 2018 as part of a transfer of operations in 2019.

Seidlstrasse 7-9-11, 80335 Munich

The South Bavaria Autobahn Directorate has been headquartered at Seidlstrasse 7-11 in the Maxvorstadt district since 1945 . An elongated, richly structured neo-baroque risalit building , according to the inscription on the balcony railing of the figure portal as a residential building built in 1901 by the Munich architect Emanuel von Seidl . The building is in the list of the Bavarian Monuments List under file no. D-1-62-000-6461 registered.
It has five floors on a floor area of ​​approx. 1500 square meters and on a plot of land of approx. 2700 square meters. The three house numbers 7, 9 and 11 are each their own property, and a corresponding division is indicated on the roof of the building. The front has a length of approx. 93 meters. Overall, the building in the historic architectural style dominates this section of the Seidlstrasse, it is surrounded by functional new office buildings.

It is only a distance of approx. 600 meters from Munich Central Station , and 300 meters from the Stiglmaierplatz underground and tram stop (U1 + 7, trams 20 + 21 + 22).
