Lynx of the month
The lynx of the month is an undoped prize for children's and youth literature that has been awarded twelve times a year by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and Radio Bremen since 1986 . The lynx of the year is chosen from the twelve monthly lynxes and is endowed with 8,000 euros.
history
The Lynx of the Month was founded by Ute Blaich von der Zeit and Marion Gerhard from Radio Bremen and awarded for the first time on October 3, 1986. The lynx logo was illustrated by Friedrich Karl Waechter . The first lynx jury consisted of Ute Blaich, Birgit Dankert , Marion Gerhard, Jürgen Spohn , Jo Pestum and Rudolf Wenzel. The first lynx winner was the book The Life of Frederick Douglass as a Slave in America, told by Frederick Douglass . From October 1986 to May 2020 400 monthly lynxes were awarded, which are numbered consecutively. In 1997, under the chairmanship of Konrad Heidkamp's lynx jury, the lynx of the month was supplemented by an annual lynx of the year endowed with 8,000 euros , selected by the lynx jury from the twelve previous monthly lynxes. The lynx of the year is awarded every year in March during the Leipzig Book Fair . The current lynx jury consists of Katrin Hörnlein (jury chair), Brigitte Jakobeit , Maria Linsmann, Christoph Rieger and Anja Robert.

Quotes about the lynx
“ From October 1986, Die Zeit and Radio Bremen will present a book every four weeks that will be different from the majority of new publications. Written against chic trends, booms, clichés, against bestseller speculations and the conformity of the only non-binding "nice". No all-purpose literature, no emotional junk, no convenient consumer template to snooze on. Word has got around that children and young people's literature should not be confused with reading at the table. "
“[The lynx wants] to offer children and young people age-appropriate, but artistically high-quality literature [...] that can explain the world, poetry and motivation to read at the same time. Luchs award-winning books therefore - fortunately - do not offer a representative overview of the total production of German-language publishing programs, but a cross-section of the upper segment, the much-touted "excellencies" of children's and youth literature. "
"So if the books that we give our children shape the adults of tomorrow, we should only choose the most moving stories: inspiring and enchanting, world-opening, ludicrous and defiant, yes, also touching and deeply sad texts and images, the three- Eight- and fourteen-year-olds are just as captivating and inspiring as the adults reading aloud or along.

30th lynx anniversary
For the 30th anniversary of the lynx, a publishing lynx was awarded for the first time on March 16, 2016 in Leipzig at the Leipzig Book Fair . The award went to the three publishers that had received the most monthly lynxes since the lynx was founded: Hanser (38 lynxes), Beltz & Gelberg (31 lynxes), Carlsen (28 lynxes). In addition, on March 17, 2015, the members of the lynx jury presented current books which, in their opinion, wrongly received no lynx. The following books were named:
