Press review

Like an Invisible Ribbon (2013)

“With How an Invisible Band, Inés Garland has presented an impressive and sensitive novel about youth and growing up in a military dictatorship. From the idyllic childhood on the island in the delta, where life apparently flows just as leisurely as the river, the book develops into an oppressive coming-of-age story, in the course of which the protagonist changes from the apolitical girl to an observer of the social Changes will. "

- Ulrike Schimming : The loss of innocence on letteraturen.de from February 22, 2013

“Inés Garland impressively describes the painful process of self and world knowledge. Alma's emotional world is explored in a sensitive and nuanced way: insecurity, the longing for love and belonging, the worry of being excluded, fear of loss, alienation, guilt and grief, often accompanied by the speechlessness that paralyzes Alma's communication with Carmen, Marito and their parents. "

- Jochen Weber : Insel im Delta , in: Süddeutsche Zeitung of March 19, 2013, No. 66, p. V2 / 4

“First love - that's Inés Garland's coming-of-age novel Like an Invisible Band . But it's about so much more than that. A melancholy book is like an invisible ribbon , the atmosphere is as oppressive as a day that is too hot by the water. Because the novel is set in Argentina in the late seventies, at the time of the military dictatorship. "

“It takes the reader more than the few notes from the publisher at the end to understand what happened in the terrible years. But that is the only criticism of this particular book that arouses so much compassion and should be an occasion to study the recent history of Argentina more thoroughly. "

- Maria Frisé : A suspension bridge is beautiful, but not enough , in: FAZ of April 20, 2013, p. 32

“Inés Garland doesn't need many words to tell her story. 250 pages are enough to open up an almost infinite world to the reader, with an equally unlimited appeal. A world that holds us under its spell long after we have closed the book again, that continues to have an effect and gains in profile long after the last sentence has faded in us. Written as poetic as it is touching, like an invisible band , it unfolds its depth effect also and especially in what remains unsaid, what is only hinted at or becomes clear between the words. [...] Great literature in the style of the early Isabel Allende . "

- Sylvia Mucke : Wortmagie , in: Eselsohr, June 2013, p. 27

“Inés Garland's language is clear, fresh and gripping. As sensitive, intelligent and precisely observing as Alma herself. She expresses deep feelings in simple pictures, Alma's parents and schoolmates are carefully characterized by their gestures, facial expressions and language. The author does not spare us conflicts, torture and murder, but the restraint of her descriptions increases their impact. All the more sensually, it tells of freedom on the river. From the smells of the forest, the sounds of the animals, from the humid heat and wonderful starry nights. About the magic of nature and the happiness that lasts until Alma gets to know love and the social and political reality. [...] The novel is constantly increasing its pace, from the cozy childhood to the dramatic events in Buenos Aires to the exciting end. The epilogue - a scene thirty years later - once again makes the great strength of the novel clear: It points far beyond the actual plot and thus opens up new spaces for the reader's imagination and emotions. "
