The extraordinary book is an undoped award presented annually since 2012 by the Berlin International Literature Festival . The award recognizes outstanding books for children, adolescents and young adults.

The Extraordinary Books will be selected by a jury made up of guests from the festival 's children and youth program , made up of writers, illustrators and scientists. During the International Literature Festival Berlin , the Extraordinary Books will be exhibited in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and the Philipp Schaeffer Library in Berlin. The books are also available in an online recommendation list. In the period from 2012 to 2019, 208 jurors awarded a total of 220 works as exceptional books . The award was initiated by Christoph Rieger .

Jurors in recent years have included David Almond , Martin Baltscheit , Frank Cottrell Boyce , John Boyne , Chen Jianghong , Roddy Doyle , Manuele Fior , Franz Hohler , Navid Kermani , Jon Klassen , Scott McCloud , Patrick Ness , Jason Reynolds, Boualem Sansal , Riad Sattouf and Janne Teller .

In 2012, the focus of the Extraordinary Books was on the topic of a story for Europe and was part of the project of the same name at the Berlin International Literature Festival.
