Mariana Chiesa Mateos (* 1967 in La Plata ) is an Argentine painter and illustrator of picture books .

life and work

Mateos studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata , moved to Barcelona in 1997 and has lived near Bologna since 2008 .

In 2004 Mateos illustrated a new edition of the book No hay tiempo para jugar - relatos de niños trabajadores (No time to play - working-class children talk about their lives) by the Mexican Sandra Arenal Huerto , which had been published in Spanish twelve years earlier in Mexico . Huerto fought for the rights of working children until her death in 2000. One result of her work is the book No hay tiempo para jugar , in which she collects various texts based on her interviews with child laborers aged 6 to 16 from Monterrey , Mexico . The children talk about their work, their life and their dreams. Mateos' pictures for this book were exhibited at the 2003 Bologna International Children's Book Fair. In 2007 the book was published in an Italian translation under the title Non c'è tempo per giocare . Migrando , another book illustrated by Mateos, was published in Italy in 2010. It was developed in collaboration with Amnesty International and is also available in France and Portugal. Migrando is a picture book without text that tells about refugees in Europe. Mateos is known to the professional world primarily for No hay tiempo para jugar and Migrando . In both books she takes up social issues and processes them in her specific style. The Mercado Gallery in Barcelona has been showing a selection of Mateos' drawings on a permanent basis since 2006.

In 2012 she was a member of the jury for the award The Extraordinary Book of the children and youth program of the Berlin International Literature Festival .
