- Susanna Rustin : A life in writing: Frank Cottrell Boyce , in: The Guardian of October 26, 2012

Cottrell Boyce is the publisher of the Heroes book series, the aim of which is to give less reading-loving children and young people access to literature. About the reasons for his involvement in the project, he said in 2012:

"I got involved in the Heroes project because I like the idea of doing something about reading for pleasure, just for fun - books, that were short enough to enjoy all the way through, and want to deliver thrills and spills and laughs. [...] It's really really important that kids learn to read. And I'm not talking about literacy. I'm not talking about being able to interpret persuasive language or spot wow-words or anything like that. I´m talking about take pleasure in a book. "

2012 Summer Olympics

Excerpt from the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics , for which Cottrell Boyce wrote the script

Cottrell Boyce achieved worldwide fame for writing the script for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics , which took place on July 27 at the Olympic Stadium in London and was titled The Isles of Wonder . The main elements of the almost four-hour show were the development from traditional country life through the industrial revolution to everyday life today and the idea of Great Britain as a cultural nation. Queen Elizabeth II made the official opening, seven young athletes lit the Olympic flame and around 900 million viewers followed the event on television. The script was based on William Shakespeare's play The Tempest . Commenting on the concept of the opening ceremony, Cottrell Boyce said:

"Maybe you shouldn't have been able to interpret it that much, because it was about wonder. The theme of the show was to take things that we're very familiar with, and make them seem again wonderful to us: the things that you know about the industrial revolution and the internet, and say 'Aren't these things astonishing, that we live in the middle of? ' and to kind of re-polish the pattern of life. So maybe it's alright that you were a little bit bewildered. "

Cottrell Boyce also commented on what makes the United Kingdom as it is today:

"Maybe that is what is good about union. We have these hurts, we have these grudges, we have these differences ... but we can tolerate them in each other because we find each other worth the trouble. "

- Frank Cottrell Boyce : Scottish independence: Could the referendum reboot Britain? , by Douglas Fraser, March 3, 2014, on: bbc.com

Until recently, Cottrell Boyce was unsure whether the opening ceremony would be well received by the public and the press:

"People around us thought it might need defending, so I was told to do press the next morning. I was completely surprised [from the positive reactions]. A lot of people were surprised. But I don´t think Danny [Boyle, director of the opening ceremony] was surprised. Danny never blinked. At no point did he show any feeling that it was going to be anything but amazing. And he was right. "

- Dorian Lynskey : Oblivion with Bells , in: Q Magazine, November 2013 issue, No. 318, pp. 82–88

The opening ceremony was released on Blu-ray and DVD.

politics

In early March 2014, Cottrell Boyce was critical of the referendum on Scotland's independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which took place on September 18, 2014:

"Maybe that is what is good about union. We have these hurts, we have these grudges, we have these differences ... but we can tolerate them in each other because we find each other worth the trouble. "

Press review

General meaning

"Frank is such a hugely influential figure in Britain's popular culture, with an extraordinarily rich and diverse portfolio."

- John Waine, Head of Oswestry LitFest : Frank Cottrell Boyce To Launch 2014 Oswestry LitFest , on: shropshirelive.com, January 6, 2014

"Tension, humor and sympathy characterize the narrative books for children and young people by Frank Cottrell Boyce. [...] He doesn't spare his heroines, but he always breaks the drama with his sparkling humor. [...] His books are a school of close inspection; their wit, whether in dealing with language or images, breaks through the usual superficial perceptions. […] In every book and every story he asks with a light hand what story telling can contribute to the self-discovery of each individual and to the memory of a society. "

- Jury of the James Krüss Prize for international children's and youth literature , consisting of Roswitha Budeus-Budde, Robert Elstner, Christiane Raabe , Michael Schmitt and Emer O'Sullivan : James Krüss Prize 2015 goes to Frank Cottrell Boyce ( Memento from April 28, 2015 in the web archive archive.today )

Millions (2004) / Millions (2004)

“Because that's what makes this extraordinary novel so special: You read it, enticed by the plot, the lively adventures and the feather-light dialogues, in one go, often with tears in your eyes because you have to laugh so much - pure entertainment, tickling of joy in the diaphragm and wonderful distraction. In addition, the German translation is pure linguistic pleasure. The moment you put it away, however, you realize to your surprise that this wasn't just a weird and funny book. Rather, it addressed a whole bunch of serious things that we all ponder at times. Somehow we have become somewhat wiser through the enjoyable reading. In any case, there is a chance. Anyone who, like Boyce, can use irony and wit and laughter to change their readers a little bit has a talent that is far too rare. He shows this brilliantly here. His novel is a gem. "

- Wilfried von Bredow : Too much pocket money , in: FAZ of August 14, 2004, No. 188, p. 36

“Caution, restraint is required here! Because some books succeed in such an unspectacular way that honors applied too thickly would only damage them. Reading is as impartial as possible in order not to let the cautious but sustained pull they develop. Frank Cottrell Boyce's Millions is one such book. […] And with Damian as the narrator, millions have turned into a funny, enigmatic, in short a children's novel that is absolutely worth reading, but which is also easy to entertain beyond the original target group. And anyone who only takes the rush with them that money alone does not make you happy is simply a hopeless case - but there are certainly plenty of patron saints for them too. "

- Olivier Löffler : Be embraced ... , in: Frankfurter Rundschau of November 24, 2004

“Always on the lookout for funny and literarily outstanding books, a combination that is unfortunately not too often found in children's literature, one can only cheer about the novel Millions by the English author Frank Cottrell Boyce. The reader should, however, have a little sense of the very special, very weird English humor, otherwise they might miss the joke of this great children's book. "

- Hilde Elisabeth Menzel : millions , in: Süddeutsche Zeitung of March 2, 2007

"The millionaire story of the screenwriter Boyce is a humorous gem."

- Klemens Kindermann : The return of the bottle ghosts , in: SPIEGEL Special 4/2004 of September 28, 2004

"A literary roller coaster ride, cushioned by philosophical considerations about money and God, those blessings and temptations that anyone who has to deal with life is exposed to, so a real family novel."

- Konrad Heidkamp : LUCHS of the year 2004 , in: Die Zeit from January 13, 2005, No. 3

Framed (2005) / Masterpiece (2006)

“Anyone who has reached page 318 and thus the end of the novel will probably observe strange phenomena in themselves. Instead of relaxation, lots of exciting questions. Was London's financial district under water recently? Was that why the paintings in the National Gallery were outsourced? Later the road map of Great Britain and Ireland is studied. What do Monet's bathers in La Grenouillère have to do with the Welsh Manod? In addition, you cast shy glances at the art calendar in the bathroom. Van Gogh's sunflowers worry. Finally the call to a specialist: Are the Ninja Turtles actually extinct? Such and similar irritations could trigger the new masterpiece of the lynx of the year 2004 award winner Frank Cottrell Boyce ( millions ). "

- Siggi Seuss : Monet in the auto repair shop , in: Die Zeit from March 23, 2006, No. 13/2006

“Unfortunately, it is seldom possible that a youth book is endowed with literary depth, weird humor, brilliant tension and original characters at the same time. Frank Cottrell Boyce already proved in his first novel Millions that he is capable of such an achievement. His second book is called Meisterwerk , alluding to the works of art that are at issue here, among other things. An unintentional play on words, because with this picaresque novel the author himself has created a masterpiece. "

- Hilde Elisabeth Menzel : Masterpiece , in: Süddeutsche Zeitung of November 2, 2007

“And that we stand on the shoulders of giants, that art makes people happy, that it celebrates existence and being there, because existence and being there deserve it - that must first be explained with as much enthusiasm and ease as Frank Cottrell Boyce. "

Cosmic (2008) / Galactic (2009)

“You have to come to this spectrum of world leaps first! And then - despite the greatest assumed improbability - to tinker a story out of it that is logical, exciting, amusing, realistic and very sophisticated, only a few can do that. "

The Unforgotten Coat (2011) / The unforgettable Coat (2012)

“At least two things are fascinating about The Unforgettable Coat , the latest book by British author Frank Cottrell Boyce ( Millions , Masterpiece , Galactic ): the narrative and the magic of the milieu. The narrative style, because Boyce seems almost incidentally, the unworthy living conditions of illegally immigrated people from other cultures in the focus. "

- Süddeutsche Zeitung

“In this novel, the not entirely new topic of children's friendship is told across cultural barriers in a very convincing and children's literary way. The fictional narrative situation in the form of a memory narrated retrospectively from the perspective of an adult, which is triggered by images, is already unusual. The polaroid photos were taken by the strange friend of the girl who once was the narrator. They pretend to show a distant world, but are nothing more than very skilful productions by the young photographer. So not only the friendship of the children becomes an issue, but also the fragility of memories and the artificiality of cultural identities. At least within the internal narrative there is no happy ending. The exotic magic with which the strange boy surrounds himself and his little brother does not protect her from the very mundane reality of deportation and the moment the girl begins to see through the web, both of them lose it. An extraordinary tale about the power of art and its limits. "

- Jury of the German Youth Literature Award 2013 : The unforgotten coat , at: www.djlp.jugendliteratur.org

“Deportation is a difficult topic and yet the author manages to approach the topic sensitively and retell it to child readers. […] Boyce is writing a political book with it, but without having a moral or educational effect in his text. He chooses a ten-year-old first-person narrator as the narrator who barely suspects what deportation and asylum mean and therefore does not always understand the actions of Genghis. The adult reader will guess what could be hidden behind some deeds. "

- Jana Mikota : German Youth Literature Prize 2013 - Nominations in the “Children's Book” category , on: Fachverband Deutsch from May 6, 2013

The unforgettable coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce is a linguistic and literary work of art . [...] A poetic book, illustrated in a heart-moving manner with Polaroid pictures, which in many ways goes beyond the scope of the 'migrant books' published so far. "

- Marie-Thérèse Schins : Gaining a foothold elsewhere , in: JuLit, Issue 3/2013, pp. 34–35

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again (2011) / Tschitti - The wonder car flies again (2013)

“The result is an entertaining and smile-intensive homage to its predecessor and its author Ian Flemming. Boyce tells an actually outrageous story [...]. He does it so convincingly and with so much charm that you are happy to buy every ludicrous twist from him and also have a lot of fun. The characters he creates are also great [...]. "

- Sylvia Mucke : Klassiker-Revival , in: Eselsohr 2013, No. 8, p. 19.

“This book, written perfectly by Mr Boyce and translated congenially by Mr Naoura, can be read in very different ways: as a plea for gentle and humane technology (because that's why we all love the old VW bus ); as a rapid coffee trip with advertising for all of Mr Fleming's products ; or simply as a lot of fun for adventurous families. "
