Wilfried Freiherr von Bredow (born January 2, 1944 in Heinrichsdorf , Pomerania ) is a German political scientist . From 1972 to 2009 he was Professor of Political Science at the Philipps University of Marburg .

Career

Baron von Bredow was born in Heinrichsdorf in the Neustettin district ( Western Pomerania ) in 1944 . His parents were the forester Hans-Christoph Freiherr von Bredow and the journalist Anja, née von Oettingen . At the end of the Second World War , the family fled to Lower Saxony from the advancing Red Army . From 1950 to 1953 he attended elementary school in Schwicheldt , from 1953 to 1954 the grammar school in Peine and from 1954 the modern-language Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Düsseldorf , where he passed the Abitur in spring 1962 .

After his military service from 1962 to 1964 von Bredow studied political science , sociology and literary history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Cologne . In 1969 he was in Bonn with a thesis on the primacy military thought in Karl Dietrich Bracher to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a research assistant at the Bonn Seminar for Political Science .

From 1972 to 2009 von Bredow was Professor of Political Science in Marburg, and from 1975 to 1977 Vice President of this university. His work focuses on the “military in democracy”, German foreign and security policy and the history of political ideas . His academic students include: a. Johannes M. Becker , Florian T. Furtak , Helmut Hubel , Thomas Jäger , Gerhard Kümmel , Sabine Lemke-Müller , Thomas Noetzel and Wolfgang Schmidt .

In the 1970s he became a member of the Working Group on the Military and Social Sciences (AMS). 1977/78 he was a research fellow at St Antony's College of Oxford University . In 1987/88 he was Visiting Professor for German and European Studies at the Center for International Studies at the University of Toronto . In 1991 and 1994/95 he was a visiting professor at the Department of Political Studies at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. From 1997 to 1999 he was Vice President and from 1999 to 2001 President of the Society for Canada Studies (GKS). In 2008/09 he was a Senior Fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald . In 2009 he was visiting professor at the Institute of European Studies at Nanhua University in Chiayi, Taiwan. In 2011 he was DAAD visiting professor at the Center of Comparative Literature and the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto in Canada. Since 2011 he has been a faculty member of the Geneva Graduate School of Governance (GGSG) in Geneva.

From 1981 to 1986 he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .

Furthermore, von Bredow is a reviewer of children's books in the FAZ and himself author of the children's book Lola rast and other terrible stories .

He is married and has one child.
