Johannes M. Becker

Johannes M. Becker (born April 29, 1952 in Marienheide ) is a German political scientist , peace researcher and former managing director at the Center for Conflict Research at the Philipps University of Marburg . He retired in 2017.

Life

After graduating from high school in Neuss in 1971 , Becker did a temporary military service as a Bundeswehr soldier (until 1993 he was major in the reserve) before studying political science, geography and sports science at the University of Marburg. He passed diploma and state exams in these subjects in 1980/1981. With a thesis on the Franco-German relationship in security policy , he received his doctorate in 1985 under Wilfried von Bredow and completed his habilitation in 1990 with a study on France's security policy under François Mitterrand .

Becker was a lecturer in the social sciences department at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 1985 to 1997 , was a visiting professor at the Institute for History and Social Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin from September 1990 to July 1992 and has been a private lecturer since 1992 at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of Marburg. There he also worked as managing director at the Center for Conflict Research . Among other things, he researches the future of Franco-German relations, the militarization tendencies of the European Union and the opportunities and risks of the European unification process . His lecture topics include the wars of the present and their responsibility for flight and forced migration as well as insights into the economic geography of the earth and into social inequality in Germany.

Becker is an honorary member of the board of the editorial board of the journal Wissenschaft & Frieden as well as chairman of the working group Marburg scientists for peace and disarmament research .

In addition, he is the founder and moderator of the Marburg "Political Salon" and the responsible university lecturer for the lecture series "Conflicts in the Present and Future". He was Scientific Director of the International Summer University and the International Undergraduate Study Program at the Philipps University of Marburg. JM Becker is a liaison professor of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation at the Philipps University of Marburg and, together with Anne Maximiliane Jäger-Gogoll, spokesman for the almost 200 VDs.
