from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Working Group for the Military and Social Sciences eV (AMS) based in Wesseling is a military-sociological research network that has existed since 1971 . The chairman has been the military sociologist Martin Elbe since 2017 .

purpose

The working group sees itself as an "information and communication forum" for military-sociological issues. From a social science perspective, he explores the relationship between the military , the state and society in a national and international context. He also supports the introduction of the knowledge gained into research, teaching and journalism. Ideally, it is based on the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS) in Chicago, Illinois, founded by Morris Janowitz .

history

The working group for the military and social sciences was founded in October 1971 at the Hermann Ehlers Academy in Kiel . The then defense commissioner of the German Bundestag , Fritz-Rudolf Schultz , had invited to the founding conference of the military sociologists, at which political scientists, psychologists and officers were also present . It was led by the later director of the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI), Bernhard Fleckenstein . Speakers at the first conference in Kiel included a. Eckart Busch , Bernhard Fleckenstein, Herbert Feser , Fritz-Rudolf Schultz, Dietmar Schössler , Klaus von Schubert and Wolfgang R. Vogt . Some contributions were subsequently published as supplements in the weekly newspaper Das Parlament .

The AMS concern was opposed to large parts of the social sciences connected with peace research. This distinguished itself from the Bundeswehr as a "critical" movement. AMS received support in particular from politics and the church.

For several years, Gerhard Kümmel ( Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr ) was chairman and Sabine Collmer , † ( George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies ) deputy chairwoman of the working group. In 2017 Martin Elbe (Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr) and Maren Tomforde took over their offices.

The association registered in the register of associations at the local court in Brühl has its headquarters in Wesseling. Paul Klein holds the honorary chairmanship .
