The Leibniz Institute Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research ( acronym : PRIF ; English : Peace Research Institute Frankfurt , PRIF for short ) is a research institute for international politics in Frankfurt am Main .

The think tank for peace research and international relations was created in 1970 at the request of the Hessian state government as an independent foundation under public law . PRIF conducts knowledge-oriented basic research, analyzes the causes of violent international and internal conflicts and researches the conditions of peace.

In addition to research, its employees are also available for policy advice and active shaping of international politics. PRIF offers orientation knowledge to the media, the public and politics and suggests options for action.

The library of the research institute is open to the public and has a collection of specialist literature on peace and conflict research.

research

For example, PRIF researches the following topics:

  • Arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation
  • International organizations, international law, normative orders
  • Non-state violent actors, transnational corporations, civil society
  • Radicalization and political violence
  • Internal dimensions of peace, systems of rule
  • Globalization and local living environments / glocalization processes

Research at PRIF is mainly divided into research programs. With its program-related research, PRIF combines basic research that encompasses the entire institute with applied research and its practical implementation. Since 2018, the institute's research program "Peace and Coercion" has been concentrating on the ambivalent relationship between coercion and the creation and maintenance of peace.

In addition, the research is divided into six program areas with a focus on international security, international institutions, transnational politics, domestic conflicts, "glocal" interrelationships and research that is not linked to the program. The division into program areas should make it possible to identify important issues and to work on research projects in the entire world-wide conflict situation in interstate, inter-societal and intra-societal space.

organization

The executive board member of PRIF is Nicole Deitelhoff . Other members of the board are Christopher Daase (deputy executive board member), Sabine Mannitz, Jonas Wolff, Susanne Boetsch, Peter Kreuzer and Simone Wisotzki.

The scientific members of PRIF form the research council. It decides on the research project of the institute as well as on the projects of the program areas.

The Board of Trustees supervises the management and approves the budget.

The Scientific Advisory Board is appointed by the Board of Trustees and supports PRIF in developing and implementing the research programs. Ten international scientists belong to it.

PRIF has been a member of the Leibniz Association since January 1st, 2009 .

Publications

In the series Studies of the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research, PRIF publishes monographs and anthologies in cooperation with Springer Verlag. In addition, around ten PRIF reports are published annually , which analyze the background and developments of political events. The four-page PRIF spotlights are aimed at a broad audience interested in peace and security issues. The PRIF Working Papers, which provide insights into current basic research and are intended to stimulate scientific exchange, also appear irregularly and exclusively online. The publications can be downloaded online and print versions can be found in numerous libraries.

Since 2018, the publications have been supplemented online by the PRIF blog , on which PRIF's academic staff discuss short texts on current issues and debates relevant to peace and conflict research.

In addition to the in-house series, PRIF together with the BICC , IFSH and INEF institutes publishes the peace report annually . It has also been available for download online since 2018.
