Nad Tatrou sa blýska is the national anthem of Slovakia .
The song was written in 1844 during a protest march by students from the Evangelical Theological Lyceum from Bratislava (Pressburg) to Levoča (Leutschau). The students demonstrated against the removal of their teacher Ľudovít Štúr by the Hungarian administration.
The verse was written by Janko Matúška and was written in 1844. The melody is that of the old Slovak folk song Kopala studienku (she dug a well).
In 1920 the first verse of the song became part of the Czechoslovakian hymn: Following the Czech hymn Kde domov můj , the Slovak one was sung without a break. In 1993 the first two stanzas of Nad Tatrou sa blýska became the anthem of independent Slovakia.
