Kde domov můj (“Where is my home?”, Listen to ? / I ) is the national anthem of the Czech Republic . The text comes from the play “Fidlovačka” (“The Shoemaker's Festival ”) by Josef Kajetán Tyl , which was premiered in Prague in 1834 , the melody was composed by František Škroup . The text consists of two stanzas, although the second is hardly known to the general public. Audio file / audio sample

Rainer Maria Rilke appreciated the song Kde domov můj and honored it in two poems in the Larenopfer Collection (1895).

As the text of the hymn suggests, the hymn originally belonged to the country of Bohemia ("země česká" = "country of Bohemia"). It did not refer to Moravia or Silesia. In analogy to another text by Josef Kajetán Tyl from the same year, Ferdinand Strejček proved that when he sings about the Czech countryside in the song, he does not mean Bohemia as an administrative unit, but the area inhabited by Czechs. The Slovaks in the conception at the time were also Czechs.

In the times of Czechoslovakia , the national anthem consisted of two parts. Following the Czech anthem, the Slovak anthem Nad Tatrou sa blýska was sung (or played). The composition was determined to be the hymn of Czechoslovakia in 1918. As early as 1990 it became the official anthem of the Czech Republic (within the framework of the federation) and will remain as the anthem of the Czech Republic after January 1, 1993.
