El Gran Carlemany ( Catalan "The great Charlemagne") is the national anthem of Andorra . The text is by Joan Benlloch i Vivo (1864–1926), the music by Enric Marfany Bons (1871–1942). On April 2, 1917, it was declared the national anthem by the Andorran parliament Consell General de les Valls . Andorra dedicated a 2 euro commemorative coin to the 100th anniversary of El Gran Carlemany's national anthem in 2017.

Original Catalan text

El gran Carlemany, mon Pare, dels àrabs em deslliurà,
I del cel vida em donà de Meritxell la gran Mare.
Princesa nasquí i Pubilla entre dues nacions neutral;
Sols resto l'única filla de l'imperi Carlemany.
Creient i lliure onze sails, creient i lliure vull ser.
Siguin els furs mos tutors i mos Prínceps defensors!

I mos prínceps defensors!

German translation

The great Charlemagne , my father, freed me from the Arabs ,
And from heaven he gave me the life of Meritxel, the great mother.
I was born a princess, a virgin, neutral between two nations.
I am the only remaining daughter of the Carolingian Empire .
Believing and free for eleven centuries, believing and free I will remain.
Let the laws of the land be my companion and my defenders be princes!

And my defenders are princes!

Historical truthfulness

The claim that Andorra was founded by Charlemagne and the last remnant of the Carolingian Empire is historically untenable. In fact, the oldest known documentary mention of the parishes of Andorra was only written 25 years after the death of Charlemagne.
