Janko Matúška (born January 10, 1821 in Dolný Kubín , then Kingdom of Hungary , now Slovakia ; † January 11, 1877 ibid) was a Slovak poet , writer and clerk . He is best known as the author of the Slovak anthem Nad Tatrou sa blýska ("Lightning over the Tatras").

Life

Matúška was born into a family of craftsmen and attended schools in Dolný Kubín and the high school in Gemer before he began to study theology at the Lutheran Lyceum in Bratislava . There he was also a member of the Institute for Slovak Language and Literature. In March he left the Lyceum with other students when Ľudovít Štúr , who had taught at the institute up to this point, was revoked because of his pro-Slovak position. Eventually he finished his studies at the Lutheran Gymnasium in Tisovec .

1850-1870 he worked in various government offices, then from 1870 as a clerk at the Arwa County Court . He died on January 11, 1877 in Dolný Kubín, the day after his 56th birthday.

Works

Matúška can be classified as a poet of the Štúr generation. He wrote mostly patriotic poems and sagas, as well as prose and drama; after the revolutions of 1848/49 he stopped writing.
