The mountain Kriváň (German Krummhorn or Ochsenhorn , Polish Krywań , Hungarian Kriván ) is located in the Tatra National Park ( High Tatras Mountains ) and is a national symbol of Slovakia. At 2,494 m above sea level , the Kriváň is one of the highest peaks in Slovakia and the Carpathian Mountains . Because of its particularly striking shape, the mountain is a topic in various Slovak myths and legends.
In 1840, Hungarian monarchists loyal to the emperor had an obelisk erected on the top of the Kriváň, which was intended to commemorate the rise of the Saxon King Friedrich August II. In the same year. This obelisk was destroyed a few years later by Slovak patriots during one of the “popular excursions” - a kind of Slovak national pilgrimage. The first excursion of this kind took place on August 16, 1841 with the participation of Ľudovít Štúr and Michal Hodža .
In the year of the memorandum of 1861, Štefan Marko Daxner organized the largest hike on the Kriváň.
Since 1955, these walks on the Kriváň have been dedicated to the Slovak National Uprising of 1944 .
The ascent to Kriváň on marked hiking trails is possible from Podbanské (underground pits), Tri studničky (three springs) or the Štrbské Pleso (Tschirmer lake).
In December 2005, a picture of the mountain was chosen as the reverse for the Slovak one, two and five euro cents coins.
