Sumi Jo (born November 22, 1962 in Seoul as Jo Su-gyeong ) is a South Korean soprano . Jo is considered to be the first Asian opera singer to have a worldwide career.

Life

She studied from 1981 to 1983 at the Seoul National University and from 1983 to 1986 at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome . In 1986 she made her debut as Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto . In 1989 she was supposed to sing the page Oscar in Un ballo in maschera under Herbert von Karajan at the Salzburg Festival . Due to Karajan's death during the rehearsal phase, she sang the role there under Georg Solti ; a recording under Karajan had already been completed.

Since then she has mainly sung coloratura soprano roles on the world's major opera stages. For the recording of the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten she won a Grammy in 1992 in the category “Best Opera Recording”.

She made a cameo on the South Korean drama series Dream High (2011). At the closing ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she sang a classic version of the Korean folk song Arirang . In 2015 released film Eternal Youth by Paolo Sorrentino she played herself. The eingesungene of her song Simple Song Number 3 received an Oscar nomination.
