The drama was very popular among young people and achieved ratings of up to 20.7%. On March 1, 2011, the day after the last episode was broadcast, the Dream High Special Concert with live performances by the leading actors was broadcast. There is a Japanese musical adaptation of the drama with Yūya Matsushita in the role of male protagonist Song Sam-dong. As of January 2012, Dream High 2 aired with a different cast.

action

The drama series begins with a 2018 news report about singer K, who became the first Korean to receive a Grammy for Best Album . This is followed by an excerpt from an interview with Kirin Art High School President Jung Ha-myung, who comments on a photo from K's school days.

The action starts in Seoul in 2010 . The singing talent Go Hye-mi, who is a student of the famous Jo Su-mi , wants to learn music at the renowned Juilliard School in the USA . But her father is deeply in debt and her mother is already dead. Her father is looking for work abroad, so Hye-mi lives alone with her sister. However, her father's creditor sells the house and forces Hye-mi to attend an audition at the Kirin Art School because he sees her as having great star potential and, according to his plan, wants his claims back in two years. Hye-mi appears at auditions with her friend Yun Baek-hee. After Baek-hee is accepted and not Hye-mi, both become rivals. However, the president of the music school, Jung Ha-myung, decides to accept Hye-mi, Jin-kuk and Song Sam-dong with a special permit. These three are supervised by teacher Kang, who is supposed to mold them. This "special approval class" is not allowed to use the actual rehearsal rooms; for this they receive support from teacher Yang Ji-man. The overweight Kim Pil-suk joins them later. The president wants his son Jin-kuk, alias Shi-hyuk, to go to the US because the media should not find out that he is his biological son, whom he has given up for adaptation. Jin-kuk doesn't want to leave Korea, however, and negotiates that if he makes his debut quickly, he can stay. This is how Jin-kuk succeeds in leaving the special class and making his debut in the six-member group K together with Baek-hee and Jason . However, this strains his relationship with Hye-mi. A love story has developed between Pil-suk and Jason over the period, but Jason is always reluctant and says that he doesn't have the same feelings for Pil-suk.

After 200 days, Pil-suk lost all of her excess weight. Group K is coming back, but Baek-hee is not as popular as it was before. When the president tries to sexually abuse her, Jin-kuk intervenes. Both leave the group. In addition, Baek-hee and Hye-mi make up again. Meanwhile, the believer Ma Du-sik founds the White Entertainment label and takes Hye-mi, Sam-dong, Pil-suk, Jin-kuk and Baek-hee. These six found the group Dream High . Due to the Baek-hee and Jin-kuk scandals, no broadcaster wants to let the group perform, which is why Ji-man is planning a flash mob that will become popular on the Internet and help the group to perform. At the same time, all 6 members take part in an audition at EMG. The winner is about to release an album in the USA. All six reach the second round, despite the high demands of EMG.

In 2018, Baek-hee is a teacher at the Kirin Art School. Pil-suk runs a kindergarten, has since been a successful singer and is still with Jason. Shi-hyuk is also a successful singer and is still under contract with White Entertainment. All four attend the 100th concert of their friend Go Hye-mi. Hye-mi dedicates the song "Only Hope" to her friend Song Sam-dong, who received the Grammy Award in the USA and therefore cannot be there. Sam-dong won the EMG audition and is urged by Hye-mi to go to the USA and release his album there. However, he does not want that because he would have to leave Hye-mi. However, he then gives in to Hye-mi.

characters

Go Hye-mi

The arrogant and emotionless Hye-mi comes from a formerly very wealthy family. When her mother died, however, her father's business failed, as he was in debt to Ma Du-sik. Her father then goes to Canada to see Hye-mi's aunt to get back on his feet. Ma Du-sik therefore wants Hye-mi to become a pop star and thus repay her father's debts. Hye-mi himself, however, would like to go to the Julliard School in New York. However, she has no choice but to protect her sister. So she and her friend Baek-hee attend the Kirin Art School audition. However, Baek-hee and not Hye-mi are selected, whereupon both become competitors. Later, however, Hye-Mi is selected as a special student by the school president and can go to the Kirin Art School. There she meets her childhood friend Jin-kuk and the country egg Song Dam-dong, between which a love triangle develops.

Song Sam-dong

Song Sam-dong comes from the country. He receives a “special approval” for the Kirin Art School from school president Jung Ha-myung, because he knows from earlier times. After a while, he began to have hearing problems that endanger his career. In the end, however, he wins the audition at EMG and becomes one of the most successful singers of all time under the stage name K.

Jin-kuk / Hyun Si-hyuk

Jin-kuk is the president's son, but he doesn't have a good relationship with him at the beginning of the drama. He knows Go Hye-mi from his childhood and he helps her out of many a predicament.

Yun Baek-hee

Baek-hee is Hye-mi's best friend and follows her everywhere. However, during the audition for the Kirin Art School, she notices that the friendship is rather one-sided and a great rivalry develops between the two. The "victory" against Hye-mi is a kind of satisfaction for her, since her mother only ever saw her as an accident and never thought she could do anything. She falls in love with Jin-kuk, because he returns her follower, whom Hye-mi found and kept before. Jin-kuk later defends her when her agency president sexually harasses her.

Jason

Jason is half Korean and half American who also attends the Kirin Art School. He is very friendly and helpful and quickly gained a reputation as the best dancer in the school. He spends a lot of time with Pil-suk because he likes her singing. In the end he falls in love with her.

Kim Pil-suk

Pil-suk is also auditioning for the Kirin Art School and appears in a sushi costume because she is very fat and believes her appearance would put her at a disadvantage. She is recorded because of her good singing. She also has perfect pitch . She's in love with Jason from the start. For him, she also loses all of her excess weight within 200 days.
