Triangle stories in film and literature

In classical literature, triangular stories mostly describe the relationship between a man and two women, while the reverse constellation is less common. Occasionally the relationship between three men or three women is also the topic, for which the novel Billy Budd is a well-known example (foundling Billy, Captain Verde and the criminal Claggart).

As a rule - almost always in the film - triangular stories describe a love relationship (wife-husband-lover or vice versa ), which is linked to the topics of infidelity and jealousy , lack of decision-making or renunciation , and sometimes also murder . Some novels are based on disturbed friendships between artists (e.g. Goethe, Hans von Bülow / Richard Wagner, Clara Schumann / Brahms). Occasionally, however, literature also recognizes platonic triangular relationships (e.g. in the religious field or Friedrich Schiller's longstanding double love for the sisters Caroline and Charlotte von Lengefeld ).

Another frequent subject is relationship conflicts between the generations, usually in the triangle between son, mother and daughter-in-law. Most of these stories take place in a heterosexual setting; an example of the representation of same-sex love is the film Abschiedsblicke (1986).

A number of cabaret or film series also know the combination of a fixed couple - a so-called screen pair - with a third leading actor (or actress). Was known here u. a. the comedian trio of Dorothy Lamour , Bob Hope and Bing Crosby .
