Two girlfriends (original title: Les Biches , literally: "The hinds") is a 1968 film by Claude Chabrol .

action

In Paris, Frédérique met the street painter Why. She takes Why into her apartment, grants her a bath and apparently seduces her there. This is only hinted at by a scene in which Frédérique tries to open the button on Why's jeans. Despite the differences between the two women, Frédérique takes them to St. Tropez , where they both exchange caresses in public. During a soirée , the architect Paul shows great interest in Why, who follows him home and spends the night with him. As a result, Frédérique becomes jealous of her and now sets about courting Paul. She succeeds and the two become a couple. In the process, Why, who is very hurt inside, because she apparently really loves Paul and probably Frédérique too, becomes more and more a disruptive factor, and whose relationship only stands in the way. But the latter steadfastly refuses to leave them alone and to disappear from their lives.

Finally, Why makes a plan to finally get Frédérique out of the way. She takes a poisoned hunting knife and confesses that she loves both Paul and Frédérique equally and never wants to leave her. She replies with the words: “Your love disgusts me! Have you still not understood that you are disturbing? ”Why pretends to hug Frédérique and stabs the knife in her back.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films described the film as a “thriller that, behind its supposedly popular story, subtly exposes the psychology of the rich bourgeoisie, its fears and neuroses, but never decides on a moral evaluation itself.” According to the film lexicon of TV Spielfilm Claude Chabrol packaged "less bitingly than in his later works [...] here his sensitive criticism of the philosophy of life of the beautiful and rich." Prisma was of the opinion that the director narrated "with great empathy [...] the melodramatic triangle story between a sophisticated woman, a young drifter and a rich architect in the chic district of St. Tropez ”and praised Jean Rabier's “ brilliant pastel camera work ”, which“ contributed to the atmosphere of great aesthetic appeal ”, and came to the conclusion:“ A convincing, tasteful one and an impressive Chabrol film.
