Saint-Tropez [ sɛ̃tʁɔpe ] ( Provencal Sant-Troupès ) is a small port town with 4,352 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French department of Var in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region . The municipality belongs to the canton of Sainte-Maxime in the Arrondissement of Draguignan .

Saint-Tropez is located on the Côte d'Azur , at the eastern foot of the Massif des Maures , on the north bank of a peninsula. The fishing village of that time attracted numerous artists such as Paul Signac , Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard towards the end of the 19th century , whose works are now exhibited in the Musée de l'Annonciade next to the port.

Saint-Tropez's boom began in the 1950s when the place developed into a meeting place for artists and high society . In Germany , Saint-Tropez is best known for Gunter Sachs and Brigitte Bardot and for the gendarmerie films with Louis de Funès . A museum dedicated to the films of Brigitte Bardot and Louis de Funes has been set up in the former police station where the gendarmerie films are set.

Saint-Tropez, named after Saint Torpes , an early Christian martyr who was beheaded in the 1st century, was just a simple fishing village until the 20th century. The strategically favorable location interested rulers and rulers since the 8th century. In 1944, Allied troops landed near Saint-Tropez during Operation Dragoon . In 1965 an artificial mini-Venice ( Port Grimaud ) was built at the outer end of the bay . The hinterland used to be much more populated than it is today. Forest fires

In the summer months, devastating forest fires have occurred repeatedly for centuries in the parched, pine-covered area of ​​Saint-Tropez along the Massif des Maures . It was reported back in 1271.
