Bernard Buffet (* 10. July 1928 in Paris ; † 4. October 1999 in Tourtour , Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ) was a French graphic artist and painter of Expressionism . In addition, he also worked as an illustrator and set designer .

Life

Bernard Buffet studied art history at the Lycée Carnot and from 1943 to 1945 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Buffet joined forces with other painters to form the group «L'homme-témoin» and belonged to the artistic avant-garde scene. At the end of the 1940s, the painters Maurice Utrillo and Georges Rouault introduced their friend Buffet to the art dealer Maurice Girandin, who signed him. In the following years, Buffet developed a distinctive and realistic style whose models were Rembrandt van Rijn , Théodore Géricault , Gustave Courbet , Henri Edmond Cross and Vincent van Gogh . He was celebrated as a painter of existentialism , was at times considered the legitimate successor of Pablo Picasso and achieved prices like this.

From 1950 to 1958, Bernard Buffet lived with Pierre Bergé . In 1958, Bernard Buffet and the singer and actress Annabel Schwob married. The couple adopted three children: Virginie (* 1962), Danielle (* 1963) and Nicolas (* 1973).

Buffet, who later fell ill with Parkinson's and could no longer work, committed suicide at his house on Tourtour in 1999.

Work and art historical significance

The picture on the right shows the color lithograph “Femme avec un chapeau rose” ( Woman with a pink hat ) from 1967 on a Yugoslav postage stamp from 1986, which at least gives an idea of the painting style typical of him. His subjects are often reduced to bony, emaciated figures that are depicted in pale colors, outlined in black against gloomy backgrounds.

The work of the artist Bernard Buffet includes more than 8000 paintings as well as numerous prints. His works are exhibited in all major museums, such as the Tate Gallery in London , the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris . The Bernard Buffet Museum has existed in Japan since 1973 and has the largest collection with over 2000 works.

In the last quarter of the 20th century there was a sudden drop in prices. While in the museums, his works often walked to the depot ( ... Bernard Buffet was about as kitsch painter considered ), appeared at flea markets many buffet reproductions on.

In the 21st century, interest in Buffet's work increased again. Several very successful exhibitions have taken place in France and around the world. In 2016, the British author Nicholas Foulkes published the book Bernard Buffet: The Invention of the Modern Mega-Artist , in which he tells a controversial biographical account of Buffet's life and work.

Bernard Buffet's works fetch very high prices again on the art market .
