The Nice Côte d'Azur Airport ( IATA : NCE , ICAO : LFMN ; French Aéroport Nice Côte d'Azur ) is an international commercial airport seven kilometers west of Nice on the French Riviera . It is the third largest airport in France after Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly and handled over fourteen million passengers in 2019.
Location and transport links
Most of the land on the southern runway was reclaimed through land reclamation and backfill of the comparatively flat Baie des Anges (Engels Bay). The Var River and its mouth into the Mediterranean Sea are located immediately to the west of the airport.
train
The closest train station to the airport is Nice-Saint-Augustin , about 800 meters from Terminal 1 on the Marseille-Ventimiglia railway line . It can be reached on foot from Terminal 1 through an underpass under the Promenade des Anglais, then through the Porte de l'Arenas business center. Local trains of the TER Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (TER PACA) in the direction of Nice or in the direction of Cannes depart during the day at intervals of no more than 30 minutes. In the medium term, there are plans to move the station westwards in order to ensure a better connection between rail, tram, local and long-distance bus lines.
tram
The tram line 2 was opened in December 2018. In the direction of the city center, it currently ends (July 2019) at the Jean Médecin underground station . Use of the section between the Grand Arénas , Aéroport Terminal 1 and Aéroport Terminal 2 stops is free.
bus
Several city and regional bus routes run from the Aéroport / Promenade stop , a few meters north of Terminal 1, directly on the famous Promenade des Anglais . The express bus routes 98 and 99 were discontinued as part of the tram connection at the end of June 2019. There are stops for long-distance bus traffic at Terminals 1 and 2 .
Street
The airport can be reached by car via the A8 (La Provençale) autoroute . The airport is one kilometer from junction 50 Nice - Promenade des Anglais .
helicopter
There is also a helicopter connection. The flights to Cannes and Saint-Tropez are offered by helicopter. Regular shuttle flights connect the airport with the Héliport de Monaco .
business
Unusual for an airport of this size is the demanding landing approach, which in visual flight conditions initially takes place over the sea at a right angle to the runway; the aircraft only turn on the landing course about 800 meters before the start of the runway. In the same way, a 90-degree curve is flown towards the open sea about four seconds after take-off in a climb, in order to keep the noise pollution for the residents as low as possible.
Terminal building
The airport has two terminals 1 and 2. A free shuttle bus runs between these, which also serves the parking spaces in between, as well as tram line 2, which is also free of charge.
Airlines and Destinations
Nice Airport is connected to numerous French and European destinations. In addition, there are a few long-haul connections from Delta to New York and Emirates to Dubai, among others . From German-speaking countries, Nice is served by Lufthansa , Swiss , Austrian Airlines , easyJet , Germanwings and Eurowings , including from Frankfurt am Main , Düsseldorf , Stuttgart, Berlin , Munich , Vienna , Basel and Zurich .
From July 1, 2017, the airport was frequented by an Airbus A380 for the first time . Emirates operates the airport daily and offers a helicopter transfer to Monaco . The helicopter flight, operated by Monacair, takes around seven minutes and is free for first-class passengers.
