The airport Nimes-Arles-Camargue , including airport Nîmes-Garons , located in the town of Saint-Gilles and in close proximity to the city Garons in the French department Gard . It is used both civilly and militarily. The Nîmes Chamber of Commerce and Industry is responsible for the civil part of the airport . The airport can be reached by car via the A 54 exit 2. A regular shuttle service connects the airport with Nîmes city center. Taxis and rental car companies are also available. The airport is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Up to 700,000 passengers can be handled on 4,260 m², the cargo capacity of the airport is 1,500 t.
The military area, a location of the Base de défense de Nîmes-Orange-Laudun , has been used by the land forces since 2011 and part of the flight operations area has been used by the civil defense as a base aérienne de la sécurité civile since 2017 .
history
A first airfield of Nîmes was in the east of the city, today's Aérodrome de Nimes-Courbessac . After the occupation of Vichy France by the German Wehrmacht in late 1942 , Nimes-Courbessac became an airfield of the German Air Force . Between November 1942 and mid-June 1944, the 3rd squadron of Jagdgruppe Süd, equipped with Bf 109F / G and Fw 190A , was located here for air defense .
The Gaullist MP Pierre Gamel had the idea of building a new airport since 1945. Construction began in 1958. Between 1961 and 2011, the airfield was a naval aviator - base of the French Navy . The Aéronavale used the Base aéronautique navale de Nîmes-Garons mainly as a base for patrol aircraft , since 1965 those of the Breguet Atlantic type .
Military use
After the Navy withdrew, the Army's 503e Régiment du Train took over the military area on the west side in mid-2011.
Since 2017 is located in Nimes on a portion of this area previously in Marignane -based Base aérienne de la sécurité civile (BASC) of civil defense. The Groupement des Avions Bombardiers d'Eau , which among other things operates the French fleet of Canadair CL-415 fire fighters , and part of the Groupement d'Hélicoptères are stationed here.
Civil use
The airport is served by Ryanair and Royal Air Maroc . Scheduled flight destinations are Casablanca , Brussels , Liverpool and London .
Technology at the airport
It is an ILS CAT I and HI / BI and PAPI available. Jet A1 AVGAS can be refueled at the airport.
