The airport La Rochelle (French Aéroport de La Rochelle - Ile de Ré ) ( IATA code : LRH , ICAO code : LFBH ) is an airport in western France on the Atlantic coast two and a half kilometers northwest of La Rochelle in Charente-Maritime . It has a 2,255 m long asphalt runway and is operated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Chambre de Commerce et d'lndustrie) La Rochelle. In 2016, 219,848 passengers were handled.

history

As early as 1932, the La Rochelle Chamber of Commerce and Industry applied for an airport to be built as a stopover for transatlantic flights. In 1933 an aero club was founded, on whose initiative flight operations began. Numerous successful air shows have been held. This ultimately led to the construction of today's airport, which began in 1938.

During the Second World War, La Rochelle-La Leu Airport was the base of German fighter planes, which were used, among other things, to protect German submarines . Between May and October 1941, the first squadron of the supplementary group of Jagdgeschwader 53, equipped with Bf109 E / F , was located here . Later, from February 1943 to February 1944, the 2nd squadron of the supplementary hunting group East was stationed here, which was reinforced by the 4th squadron of the same association in the summer of 1943 from June to August. In addition to Bf 109F / G, Jagdgruppe Ost also had Fw 190A in its portfolio.

After the war, the airport got a boost from scheduled flights to various French destinations. In 1961 an asphalt runway was built and in 1966 a terminal for handling was built.

traffic

The airport is used by private pilots, but is also served by commercial air traffic. There are currently flight connections to Great Britain and Italy, and there are also domestic flights.
