The Unsatisfied is a Franco-Italian feature film that Claude Chabrol shot in France in autumn 1959 with some of the leading young actors from the Nouvelle Vague .
action
The unsatisfied - that's four saleswomen in Paris in 1959 who work in Monsieur Belin's electronics store. Their names are Jane, Jacqueline, Ginette and Rita, and they all have one thing in common: They may not suffer economic hardship, but they are bored to death. After the shop closes, each of them looks for their little escape, which is supposed to lead them out of the daily monotony and promises something like excitement and real life. Ginette goes on stage and secretly tries to sing as a singer in a music hall (the French form of cabaret), Rita plans to marry a middle-class philistine who will enable her to move up in society, the boyish Jane leaves when she is not with "Her" soldier depends on questionable male acquaintances, and the somewhat naive Jacqueline dreams of great love. When a stranger chases her in the form of a motorcyclist with a mustache, she thinks she has found her dream man in him. But in Jacqueline's case, this dream bursts in a particularly cruel and tragic way: her young girl's dream turns out to be a nightmare, the stalker on the moped is nothing more than a sex offender, and he murders Jacqueline in a forest before he then makes off on his motorcycle.

Reviews
The lexicon of international films says: “Slowly, precisely, with almost no external action, this film study penetrates the everyday life of young saleswomen to reveal their mental state. The finding: boredom, a failed desire for happiness, a possible remnant of hope. A film characterized by social sentiment and a cool art of communication, staged seriously and convincingly, far from any speculation. "
“The melodramatic ending belongs to a film that wants and achieves two things. With careful meticulousness he observes the frustration of four little shop assistants, who are not threatened with material misery, but who in the monotony of everyday life threaten to lose themselves and their personalities. (...) The film also analyzes the role of women in a patriarchal society. "
