Paul Misraki (born January 28, 1908 as Paul-Marie Misrachi in Constantinople , Ottoman Empire , † October 30, 1998 in Paris , France ) was a French composer , film composer , writer and songwriter .

Live and act

Born as a descendant of Sephardic Jews in what is now Turkey (Istanbul), Paul-Marie Misrachi was an extremely creative and successful composer of French post-war films. His father worked as an employee at an insurance company. After a stay in Bucharest, the family moved to France during the First World War (1915). Paul Misraki studied music with Charles Koechlin in Paris before joining Ray Ventura's orchestra at the age of 21 . He belonged to this band as a pianist, composer and arranger Misraki until the outbreak of World War II . During this time Misraki was already composing his own pieces for Ventura as well as for a number of sound films. His first work for the cinema in 1931 was the composition of Jean Renoir's On purge bébé ; however, his work was not mentioned here. Misraki appeared several times as a copywriter in those years. As a result of the occupation of France by the German Wehrmacht , the now highly endangered Jew Misraki fled first to the unoccupied zone and finally to South America , where he only occasionally found work in film - mostly in Argentina in 1943 and 1944 . His song compositions outside the cinema, created in Argentina ( Una mujer ) and Brazil, show Latin American influences.

In 1945 Paul Misraki returned to Paris. In the following three decades Misraki rose to become one of the most sought-after and hard-working film composers in his country. He composed primarily for the artistically less ambitious, but commercially extremely successful entertainment film. In addition to some great canvases with Brigitte Bardot ( And always lures the woman , The daisy is defoliated ), Misraki has also supplied productions for prominent representatives of the Nouvelle Vague generation, such as Claude Chabrol's Scream, if you can, and steps without a trace and Jean, since the late 1950s -Luc Godard's Lemmy Caution against Alpha 60 . Misraki often used sounds in his compositions that could not deny his oriental origins.

Paul Misraki was also very active outside of film. He created several operettas (" Fantastique "), countless chansons (since 1935) and stage compositions. As a writer and editor, he appeared with novels, essays and correspondence. Another area of interest Misrakis was ufology ; on this subject he published the book Les Extraterrestres in 1962 .
