The disappointed (original title: Le Beau Serge , German alternative title: The beautiful Serge ) is a French film drama from 1958 and the first film by Claude Chabrol .
action
After more than a decade, François Baillou returns to his home village and realizes that the people have not changed much otherwise. His old friend Serge, whose child with Down syndrome has since passed away, has become addicted to alcohol. He has become an angry and self-grappling person who refuses to face their life difficulties. François is now trying to help him and find out what is the cause of his completely changed behavior.
background
The film is considered the first work of a new film style, the Nouvelle Vague (New Wave). This type of representation was represented by a few young French film directors who were previously mostly active in journalism and in this way protested against the often simple and predictable structure of commercial film in France.
Claude Chabrol, who had previously worked for the Cahiers du cinéma , shot his first film in eight weeks in the municipality of Sardent in the French department of Creuse , where he had spent the war years with his grandparents. It was financed by his first wife Agnès through the inheritance of their grandmother. The unexpected success of the film made him feel obliged to continue filmmaking.
Reviews
“Claude Chabrol's first feature film […] depicts the economic and moral neglect of a remote village in the province of Creuse in a remarkably dense environment. He connects it with the less convincing portrayal of a friendship conflict between a student on convalescence leave and a young married driver who is addicted to alcohol. "
"Claude Chabrol's directorial debut convinces with the excellent actors and the tightly staged depiction of the adverse living conditions in provincial France."
