Religious

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The adjective religious basically has two different meanings that can only be deduced from the context used:

  • related to (a concrete) religion - a collective worldview based on belief in certain transcendent forces
  • related to religiosity - the individual feeling of a transcendent reality ( not necessarily tied to a religion)

The following terms are often used synonymously, but each have different meanings:

  • believing (related to a (religious) belief): see belief
  • pious (related to the attitude and way of life that is deeply rooted in a belief or religion): see piety
  • godly (related to the reverence of a god): see godly fear
  • ecclesiastical (related to the institution of the church): see church (organization)
  • Christian (related to Christianity): see Christianity
