Kriváň (Hungarian Krivány ) is a municipality in central Slovakia . It is located in the valley of the Slatina River at the foot of the Veporské vrchy Mountains near the towns of Detva and Hriňová , about 28 km from Zvolen and 31 km from Lučenec .
The community was officially established in 1955 when it was spun off from the Detva municipality . In 1993 the place Korytárky was spun off as an independent municipality.
The history of the place begins in the second half of the 19th century, when the Salgótarján – Lučenec – Zvolen – Vrútky (continuation of the Hungarian Northern Railway from Pest ) was opened here in 1871. The resulting train station favored the development of industry around it, so residential buildings were also built from which the later community developed. The railway line is now part of the Zvolen – Košice line .
