Hungarian Northern Railway
The Hungarian Northern Railway , Hungarian Magyar északi vasút (MÉV) was a railway company in Hungary . She was the owner and operator of the route from Pest to Salgótarján and a branch from Salgótarján to Josephstollen . The seat of the company was in Pest .
history
The Hungarian Northern Railway had its origin in the kk-privileged Pest-Losoncz-Neusohl Railway and Hard Coal Union founded in 1863 . On January 19, 1863, this company received the concession for the Pest – Salgótarján and Salgótarján – Losonc – Neusohl lines . Branch lines were planned from Neusohl via Sillein to Oderberg and from Hatvan to Gyöngyös . Two connecting railways should also enable continuous rail traffic with the Theissbahn .
The company ran into financial difficulties during the construction of its first line. In the summer of 1865 all funds were used up and the company had to file for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy proceedings came to an end on October 6, 1866 after receiving massive government aid. The company was renamed the Hungarian Northern Railway Company . In 1867 the main connection to Salgótarján and the Joseph tunnel was finally put into operation.
However, the volume of traffic on the route fell short of expectations, so that the company ran into financial difficulties again. In 1868, the company's railroad lines, with an operating length of 16.67 miles (125.46 km), were acquired by the Hungarian state. The society then dissolved.
The Hungarian State Railways extended the line north to Ruttka (today: Vrútky) by 1873 , where it connected to the main line of the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Ks.Od.). This established the direct rail connection to the Upper Silesian coal field , which is important for Hungary .
