history

The place arose in the 18th century from parts of the present-day town of Detva as part of the Víg undaš estate and was first mentioned in writing in 1863 as Hrinyová . The population growth is due to the influx of farmers, but also the growth of glassworks in this region. Finally, on October 21, 1890, the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior allowed the separation from Detva. On September 5, 1891, Hriňová was declared an independent municipality. In 1895, today's Detvianska Huta community was spun off. In addition to the glassworks, the population was employed in forestry, agriculture, livestock farming and as a charcoal burner. Due to rising costs, the glassworks was closed in 1914 and has not been in operation since then, so that only a steam sawmill remained as a major employer.

The town in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic there was great unemployment and poverty, so that residents often had to look for work abroad. The surroundings played an important role during the Slovak National Uprising .

Hriňová received its town charter on January 1st, 1989.
