Valaská (Hungarian [Garam-] Olaszka - until 1882 Valaszka ) is a municipality in Okres Brezno in central Slovakia .
It is located in the Horehronie region on the Hron ( Gran ) river on the southern slope of the Low Tatras , with part of the municipality extending into the Slovak Ore Mountains . With its 3850 inhabitants, it is the third largest municipality in the Okres Brezno after Brezno and Podbrezová , both neighboring municipalities. The rivers Čierny Hron and Bystrianka (in the municipality of Piesok) flow into the Hron in the municipality. The city of Brezno is six kilometers east and the regional capital Banská Bystrica 36 kilometers west.
Valaská was first mentioned in 1470. The name indicates the Wallachian colonization.
The narrow-gauge Schwarzgranbahn (Čiernohronská železnica) to Čierny Balog begins today in Valaská (district Chvatimech) .
