The Čiernohronská železnica (short ČHŽ , German Schwarzgranbahn ) is a forest railway with a gauge of 760 mm in Slovakia . It opened up the valley of the Čierny Hron in the Slovak Ore Mountains for logging. The line, now operated as a museum railway , has been a national cultural monument of Slovakia since 1982 .

history

Railway station in Čierny Balog

The planning of the railway began in 1898 following instructions from the then Minister of Agriculture. Construction of the first section - up to now in operation - began in 1908; a year later (1909) regular traffic between sawmills in Čierny Balog and Hronec began . The network was expanded to move wood from the forests. Russian prisoners were also used for the expansion during the First World War .

The first official name of the railway was in Hungarian Fekete Garam Vasút . This name can still be seen today in the form of the abbreviation FGV. On July 19, 1927, passenger traffic was also permitted on the Čierny Balog - Hronec route.

Traffic was restricted in the 1960s, and operations officially ceased in 1982. At the same time, the railway has been declared a national cultural monument . A year later, volunteers began to rebuild the railway. In 1992 museum traffic was started between Chvatimech and Čierny Balog. The reconstruction of the branch to Dobroč was completed with the official opening ceremony on April 30, 2012.

In Čierny Balog the train goes through the football stadium of TJ Tatran Čierny Balog, which also happens during games. If there is no game, the driver opens the gates by radio so that no stop is necessary. The stadium was probably built during the non-operating period from 1982 to 1992.

In April 2020, the Schwarzgranbahn acquired all of the old rolling stock (seven railcars and ten control cars) of the Swiss Waldenburgerbahn, which was being converted to meter gauge . After the Schwarzgranbahn has been electrified, it will be used from May 2025.
