Michalová (until 1927 Slovak also "Michalková"; Hungarian Mihálytelek - until 1886 Mihalova ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 1,358 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Brezno , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj , and belongs to the traditional Landscape Horehronie is counted.

The village is located in the foothills of the Horehronské podolie valley , more precisely in its lower part called Breznianska kotlina in the valley of the Rohožná brook , surrounded by the foothills of the Veporské vrchy mountains . The height in the municipality varies from 586  m nm to 1195  m nm and is mostly covered by mixed and coniferous forest. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 590  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Brezno .

history

The place was founded in 1788 as a chamber settlement in what was then the area of ​​the city of Brezno, near an iron ore mine and a blast furnace. After the end of pig iron production in the late 19th century, most of the inhabitants lived from forestry and sawmills, the production of charcoal, and some worked as carters.

Until 1918, the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia. In the years 1938–1950 there was a manganese ore mine near the place.
