Braväcovo (Hungarian Baracka - until 1899 Bravaczkó ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 688 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Brezno , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj and is part of the traditional landscape Horehronie .

geography

The community is located on the southern slope of the Low Tatras in the local national park . Except for the immediate local area, the municipal area is richly covered with coniferous forests, which at higher altitudes turn into mountain pastures. The highest point is the mountain Beňuška ( 1542  m nm ), which is locally called Käčka . The center of the village is at an altitude of 615  m nm and is 12 kilometers from Brezno .

The municipality is divided into the districts Braväcovo, Podholie and Srnkovo, which are, however, not official parts of the municipality.

Neighboring communities are Jarabá in the north, Bacúch in the east and Beňuš in the south and west.

history

The place emerged in the late 16th century as a logging settlement in the municipality of Beňuš and was first mentioned in writing in 1630. The first settlers were German miners and Polish charcoal burners, who first worked in copper ore mines and, after they were exhausted, worked as woodcutters and permanently settled in the village. In 1828 there were 44 houses and 332 inhabitants who made a living from forestry, sheep farming, but also work in nearby ironworks.

Until 1918 the place in Sohl County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today Slovakia. In 1957 Braväcovo separated from the municipality of Beňuš and has been an independent municipality ever since.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 722 inhabitants in Braväcovo, 664 of them Slovaks and one each Magyar, Moravian and Czech. 55 residents gave no information in this regard. 615 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, three residents each to the Greek Catholic Church and the Reformed Church and one resident each to the Seventh-day Adventists and the Evangelical Church AB; one resident professed a different denomination. 27 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 71 residents was not determined.

Culture

Braväcovo still houses many traditionally built log houses . T. find use as weekend houses. Every July the folklore festival Na Bielych Hand findetoch takes place in the village .
