Steimatzky is the largest bookstore chain in Israel . The company, which was founded in the 1920s, has around 160 bookstores (2010) and 700 employees. Steimatzky has a market share of around 40%.

history

Tzvi Steimatzky founded his first bookstore in Tel Aviv in 1920 . In 1925 his half-brother Yechezkel Steimatzky opened a second shop in Jerusalem and another bookstore in Haifa in the same year . In 1927, Steimatzky saw great potential for bookstores in the Middle East and opened a store in Beirut and, during World War II, in Baghdad , Cairo , Alexandria and Damascus . With the outbreak of the Palestine War , expansion plans came to a standstill. The shops in the Arab countries had to be given up.

In 2004 Steimatzky merged with the publishing house Keter Publishing House and was taken over by the Israeli private equity firm Markstone Capital Partners in 2005. In 2014, Yafit Greenbergs G Group took over the company from Markstone Capital.
