Šumiac (Slovak until 1927 also "Šumiacô"; Hungarian Királyhegyalja  - until 1902 Sumjác ) is a municipality in Banskobystrický kraj in Slovakia .

geography

The place is located in the eastern part of the Horehronie region at the foot of the Low Tatras under the mountain Kráľova hoľa ( 1945  m nm ), 43 km east of Brezno and about 40 km south-southwest of Poprad .

In addition to the main town, the municipality of Červená Skala (since 1960) also belongs to the municipality. In 1954, however, the municipality lost the settlements Nová Máša, Švábolka, Vaľkovňa and Zlatno.

history

The place was founded in the 15th century and was first mentioned in 1573.

Until 1918 the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia , or today Slovakia.
