Podbrezová (Hungarian Zólyombrezó ) is a municipality in central Slovakia . It is located at the foot of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the Low Tatras in the Horehronské podolie valley , 10 km from Brezno and 35 km from Banská Bystrica .
The municipality was created in 1960 through the merger of the 6 previously independent towns Vajsková , Skalica , Chvatimech , Štiavnička , Podbrezová and Lopej and took over the name of the main town. (Pod-) Brezová (literally “lying under the Brezová”) was built in the 19th century on the corridors of Lopej around the ironworks founded in 1840 . Brezová officially appears for the first time in 1863 in the name of Lopejvajszkovabrezova and is named after the mountain of the same name.
After 1918, due to the changed economic situation, the important steelworks was always close to being completely shut down, but this never happened for strategic reasons. In 1939, under dubious circumstances, the plant was incorporated into the Reichswerke Hermann Göring ; After 1945 the communist planning system was expanded considerably, in particular to place pipe production on a broad basis. Today the tube manufacturer Železiarne Podbrezová is one of the largest companies in Slovakia.
