Spain opened the European Championship qualification with a 2-1 victory on October 4, 1978 in Zagreb against hosts Yugoslavia. In front of 55,000 spectators, Juanito and Santillana scored the goals. On November 15, Asensi scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 against Romania. The 0-1 home defeat on October 10, 1979 in Valencia against Yugoslavia by a goal by Surjak could no longer prevent the group victory of coach Kubala's team. Only Vicente Del Bosque and Ángel María Villar had played all six qualifying matches. Asensi, Migueli and four-time goalscorer Santillana were each called up in five games.

The Spaniards got off to a good start in the group stage, with a secure defense around the strong goalkeeper Luis Arconada and the pivotal point in midfield, Juan Manuel Asensi , who kept Italian strikers like Roberto Bettega and Francesco Graziani in check, and thus beat hosts Italy Achieve a tie. This was followed by two bitter defeats for the seleccion against the surprise team from Belgium (1: 2) and England (1: 2), and in the end only fourth and last place in the group.
