Francisco Javier González Urruticoechea (born February 17, 1952 in San Sebastián , † May 24, 2001 in Barcelona ), better known as Urruti , was a Spanish football player .

Player career

Urruti, as he was called by his fans, began his career in the youth department of SD Lengokoak, a club from the Basque city of San Sebastian. In 1969 he came to Real Sociedad San Sebastián's second team, where he stayed until 1972. That year Urruti was promoted to the first team and made his debut a year later. The Basque moved to Espanyol Barcelona in Catalonia in 1977 . In 1981 the Espanyol goalkeeper was named the best Spanish player of the year. That year he also moved to Espanyol's big brother at FC Barcelona .

In Barcelona he won the Spanish Cup twice, the Spanish Supercup once and was able to win the Spanish championship title in 1985. He played in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1981/1982 season, which the Catalans won 2-1 against Standard Liège . Later he was in the final of the 1985/86 European Cup . Here, FC Barcelona could not prevail against Steaua Bucharest and lost on penalties against the Romanians . Urruti was able to save two penalties, but his opposite Helmuth Duckadam held four.

He ended his career in 1988 after being pushed onto the bench by Andoni Zubizarreta in the last few seasons .

Internationally, Urruti played five times for the Spanish national soccer team . He took part in the World Championships in 1978 in Argentina (out in the first group phase), 1982 in Spain (out in the second group phase) and 1986 in Mexico (out in the quarter-finals). But he was not used in any World Cup game. In addition, Urruti was in the Spanish squad for the Euro 1980 in Italy, where he was also not used.

Urruti also played in two international matches for the Basque football team.

The Basque died in 2001 after a serious car accident in Barcelona . After his death, a golf tournament in Spain, the Trofero Javier Urruti , was named after him.
