Helmuth Duckadam (born April 1, 1959 in Semlac ) is a former Romanian football player and current - functional from the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians . In the Romanian sports press he was at times listed under the name Ducadam , his first name is occasionally written Helmut .

Career

From Semlacana Semlac, the club from his hometown Semlac in western Romania, Duckadam moved in 1974 for two years to the sports school of Gloria Arad . After a brief interlude at UTA Arad , he joined Constructorul Arad for one season, for which he played in Divizia C in the 1977/78 season. In 1978 he returned to UTA Arad back and made his debut on 17 September 1978 in the Game against CS Târgovişte in the Divizia A . At the end of the season there was relegation to Divizia B , in which Duckadam remained with UTA for two seasons. When the promotion succeeded, the joy was short-lived, because at the end of the 1981/82 season UTA had to relegate as the table penultimate. Duckadam had been in goal in all games this season and was then committed by the capital city club Steaua Bucharest . For this he did not appear until the second half of the 1982/83 season , after he had guarded the goal of the Romanian national team for the first time on September 1, 1982 in the game against Denmark . At Steaua he should celebrate all his successes. As a goalkeeper , he played a total of 133 top division appearances for both clubs in Divizia A.

Hero of Seville

Duckadam became famous for his eleventh and last European Cup game, the final of the 1986 European Cup in Seville, in which Steaua Bucharest played as an outsider against FC Barcelona . When the game went goalless on penalties after 120 minutes, he was able to parry all four of the opponent's penalties - shot by José Ramón Alexanko , Ángel Pedraza , Pichi Alonso and Marcos Alonso Peña  . Steaua won the final 2-0 on penalties and Duckadam has since been dubbed the "Hero of Seville".

illness

Not long after this triumph, in the summer of 1986, Duckadam fell victim to a vascular disease on his arm and was operated on. The wildest rumors were circulating about the operation on Duckadam's right arm. The Bild newspaper reported that the president's son Nicu Ceaușescu had the goalkeeper break both arms in order to get possession of his Mercedes. However, Duckadam contradicted this rumor.

After the operation, Duckadam had to end his career first.

Career end and new beginning

Also because of his illness, which meant the end of his career at the age of 27, he only played two internationals for Romania, both in 1982. There were also four internationals for the U-21 national football team in his country .

Duckadam was replaced by Dumitru Stângaciu in the gate of Steaua. After his recovery he worked for UTA Arad and from 1989 stood again for two seasons for the then second division club Vagonul Arad .

After trying to set up a football school for children and young people in his hometown Semlac, Duckadam worked for a time as a border guard in Nădlac . In 2004 he joined the PNG-CD , in which he is also politically active.

Helmuth Duckadam has been President of Steaua Bucharest since August 11, 2010 . He has more representative tasks.
