In the first group match, the Czechoslovaks lose against eventual European champions Germany 0-1 with a goal from Rummenigge in the 57th minute. In the second group game, a clear 3-1 win against the Greeks was achieved. The goal scorers were Panenka, Vizek and Nehoda. In the third group game it was decided whether Czechoslovakia or the Netherlands should qualify for the small final. A draw was enough for the Czechoslovaks. After a goal by Nehoda in the 16th minute, Kist equalized in the 59th, which was enough for Czechoslovakia and they were allowed to play against hosts Italy in the small final.

Czechoslovakia went ahead in the small final with a goal from Jurkemik in the 54th minute. In the 73rd minute the Italians were able to equalize through Graziani. The game in regular time ended 1: 1, there was no extra time and so there was a penalty shoot-out. After the Czechoslovaks scored eight times in a row on penalties and the Italians as well, the Italian international Collovati took on and missed. Masny scored with his penalty, making Czechoslovakia third in this European Championship.
