Jan Berger senior (born November 27, 1955 in Prague ) is a former Czech soccer player and current soccer coach .

Life

Born in Prague, Berger began playing football at the small district club TJ Břevnov. In 1976 Škoda Plzeň signed him . From 1978 to 1980 he did his military service with Dukla Prague . There he became Czechoslovakian champion in 1979. Then he went to Sparta Prague . In 1980 he won gold with Czechoslovakia at the Olympic Games in Moscow , he was also in the squad of the Czechoslovak national team, which was third at the 1980 European Championship. He was also a member of the squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Berger became champions with Sparta in 1984 and 1985, and in 1984 he was Czechoslovak footballer of the year.

In 1986 he was allowed to move abroad and went to FC Zurich , where he stayed for four seasons. In 1990/91 he played for FC Zug , then for Juventus Zurich (1991-1996). Further stations in Switzerland were FC Kreuzlingen (1996–1998) and FC Schlieren (1998/99). From 1999 to 2002 he played for SK Černolice, then for Mělník-Pšovka (2002/03), Spartak Příbram (2003/04) and SK Strančice (2005).

For the 2005/06 season he took over the coaching position at his former club Dukla Prague, in October 2005 he ran again in a league game for Dukla. Due to unsuccessfulness he was released in December 2005, in March 2006 he took over SK Zeleneč in the 8th division. In July 2009, Berger was coached by third division Slavoj Vyšehrad, after just one win from five games in early September.

As a player- coach, Berger already worked in his lower-class positions in Switzerland, where he also worked as a groundskeeper and painter and varnisher , which was his learned profession. From 2000 to 2003 he looked after the youth of Sparta Prague, from 2003 to 2005 FK Brandýs nad Labem.

Jan Berger had an offer from Real Madrid in 1980 , but turned it down for fear of reprisals for his relatives. He had alcohol problems for some time and spent three months in a mental institution. He was also imprisoned for insulting the then Czechoslovak President Gustáv Husák .
